Task: Membership website for monthly subscription box business with eCommerce
Project goals: Design & build a user-friendly paid monthly box subscription site that also offered gifting and full eCommerce and that works beautifully across multiple devices, especially mobile.

Background: The Think Gin Club is a new subscription box business where clients sign up for a membership to receive a regular delivery of high quality and unusual artisan gins. Entering an established market with a number of existing key players, the client’s focus was on delivering a high quality stand out product and customer experience that grabbed attention and disrupted the status quo.
The project requirements were complex with very specific user-experience and functionality goals. Our task was to design and build a custom ecommerce solution within a short launch period, that delivered the following functionality:
- Paid subscriptions with variable periodic recurring payments
- Automatic attempts to collect payment if recurring payment fails
- Paid Members granted access to restricted content based on subscription levels
- Gifting products and subscriptions to third parties
- Full eCommerce (shop / cart / checkout) for purchase of club products
- Member account access with options to edit account and modify subscriptions
- Integration with Stripe payment gateway for recurring payments
- Custom monthly data export for shipping / logisitics partners
- Multiple custom post-types for blog, recipes and featured gins
After reviewing and testing a number of alternative solutions, including leading purpose-built subscription box software platforms, we decided the best solution, that gave us all of the tools and flexibility we needed, was to build a custom website using WordPress.
To achieve the all of the necessary user and admin functionality we used WooCommerce with a number of key extensions to achieve this, including:
- WooCommerce Subscriptions
- WooCommerce Memberships
- WooCommerce Customer / Order CSV Export
After much testing and re-testing, the site delivered with a splash of tonic and a twist of lime across all the project’s technical and aesthetic targets.
